GM to build 75% fewer Chevy Bolts than originally planned, report says

General Motors will build 75% fewer Chevrolet Bolts than it originally planned, producing 35 000 more examples before the model's limited run ends in the first quarter of 2027, Reuters reports, citing a union official.

The reduced total contrasts with initial plans for 150 000 vehicles and follows the removal of the US federal EV tax credit late last year, which the report says altered demand expectations for the entry‑level EV.

"As we previously announced when we first introduced the 27 Bolt, we saw an opportunity to bring it back, even if for a limited run... We haven't provided a specific end timeline and don't have more details to share at this time on that. In the meantime, I can say it continues to be America's most affordable EV," said a Chevrolet spokesperson.

Workforce and plant changes

A plant memo seen by Reuters reportedly shows almost 1 000 Fairfax assembly workers on indefinite layoff, and the planned return of a second work shift has been delayed as a result of the revised Bolt output.

GM plans to shift production of the petrol Chevrolet Equinox and Buick Envision to the Fairfax facility; the Equinox is currently built in Mexico and the Envision in China, the report says.

"We continuously evaluate market dynamics and customer demand," said General Motors, company.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is priced from $28,995 including destination and remains the cheapest new EV on sale in the US for now. Once Bolt production ends, Chevrolet's least expensive EV will be the Equinox EV, listed at $36,795.

Chevrolet sold almost 58 000 Equinox EVs in 2025, and the report adds that Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and Hyundai will be positioned to undercut the Equinox EV on price once the Bolt's limited run concludes.
