A 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello formerly owned by Michael Jordan sold at auction for $2.7 million, significantly exceeding its pre-auction estimate of $700 000–$1.3 million.
That price is notable given the 550 Maranello market: high-mileage examples in Europe and the United States can change hands for just over €100 000 (under $150 000), while low-mileage cars have sold for more than $500 000 this year.
Jordan ordered the car new from Foreign Cars Italia of Greensboro, North Carolina. He owned it for five years and drove it about 6 400 miles (10 299 km); the vehicle was fitted with a customised driver’s seat with slimmer padding and revised rails so the NBA legend could fit.

Provenance and sale details
After Jordan sold the car through Lake Forest Sportscars in Illinois in 2002, it disappeared from public view and was kept for roughly 25 years in a private Californian collection. Miami dealership We Are Curated tracked the car down via its VIN, persuaded the owner to sell and returned the Ferrari to Chicago for auction through Joopiter.
When the car changed hands on October 1 the odometer read 18 501 miles (29 774 km), indicating it has been driven sparingly. The Ferrari is finished in Rosso Corsa with chrome-finished five-spoke wheels and tan leather on the seats, door panels, transmission tunnel and lower dashboard.
Joopiter has not disclosed the buyer. Whether the sale will push values for other celebrity-owned 550s remains to be seen, but the result sets a new price benchmark for a Maranello with strong provenance.
